Theresa Mongiovi Testifies Before House Labor & Industry Committee

July 17, 2018

On April 24, 2018, Theresa Mongiovi, Chair of BCGL’s Employment and Labor Department, testified before the Pennsylvania House of Representatives Labor and Industry Committee on best practices to eliminate workplace harassment and discrimination. In the wake of the #MeToo movement, the Pennsylvania General Assembly is considering several amendments to the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act. If passed, the amendments would significantly expand the laws prohibiting discrimination and harassment in Pennsylvania, and impose additional compliance obligations on Pennsylvania employers. In an effort to better understand the issues associated with gender discrimination and sexual harassment, the Committee held a full-day public hearing to hear from various stakeholders. As a management-sided employment lawyer, Theresa was asked to share employer best practices to combat harassment and discrimination in the workplace.  You can read a summary of Theresa's testimony here. The current cultural climate provides the perfect opportunity for employers to evaluate their prevention programs and make proactive changes.  Employers should critically evaluate their company culture, policies and practices, and current training efforts. BCGL’s employment team can assist in developing a comprehensive discrimination-prevention program tailored to an employer’s individual work environment and culture.
